Straddie, as the locals call it, is the perfect location for students to gain an immersive understanding of Aboriginal culture and learn about the island’s rich cultural history and environmental factors. The island also provides a fascinating range of habitats for students to enjoy hands-on educational and research programs as an extension of their curriculum and general knowledge.

The island boasts a range of tourism operators who offer programs, tours and workshops designed for school group camps and excursions. Program offerings vary from cultural, arts, recreational and historical based topics. SeaLink’s Group Booking team can adapt programs into any school itinerary to suit all group sizes, age, and budgets.

Indigenous Cultural Workshops

North Stradbroke Island is rich with Aboriginal history and culture, which is believed to be one of the oldest living cultures in the world today. It is recommended to pay respect to the traditional owners of the land, past, present and emerging, with a Welcome to Country upon arrival and the option to extend into a cultural workshop. Presented by Indigenous Cultural Program Manager and Quandamooka man Matthew Burns, engaging workshops are available to be booked together or separately. In order to ensure students get the most out of the experience there are varying workshops suitable for different ages ranging from prep to tertiary. Covering everything from bush medicines to fire making, painting, traditional artefacts and how to throw a traditional “come-back” boomerang, each program provides students a remarkable and memorable cultural immersion opportunity.

Adventure and Recreational Activities

With kilometres of land, sandy beaches, vegetation, and wildlife, Straddie is the ideal expansive playground for your students! What better way to explore and incorporate team building into your camp, than with an adventure or recreational tour or activity? Ever popular with school groups, our safety focussed operators offer a range of land and water-based activities.

Choose from several activities including but not limited to kayaking, snorkelling, sandboarding, boogie boarding, surfing, and surf safety awareness.

Be sure to add a visit to the North Stradbroke Island Historical Museum on Minjerribah into your itinerary! The SeaLink Group Booking team can help you incorporate an entry or a tour of the museum, featuring an extensive and insightful collection of artefacts, documentation and displays pertaining to over 25,000 years of island history.

The museum offers tours relevant to year level curriculum including design & technology, and first contact studies.

Tailored tours and bespoke presentations are available to groups with specific curriculum requirements, and can include historical topics ranging from conservation, marine life, and wildflowers, to mining and water transport.
