We conduct incursions that teach children about disability inclusion, innovation, community, accessibility and human rights.

Every incursion is co-facilitated by a person with lived experience of disability, illness or injury, enabling students to get a first hand account of why inclusion matters, and the small but impactful actions we can take for a more inclusive society.

Our sessions are fun and interactive with opportunities to:

  • Discuss Same and Different, Unique, and the Human Experience
  • Disability awareness activities to learn basic Auslan sign language, simulate vision impairment and understand physical disability
  • Touch and discuss various aids and equipment, innovations and technology
  • Ask anything Q&A with our co-facilitator.

STUDENT REFLECTION: BARUCH AND INCLUSIVITY

Introduction:

29-year-old Baruch is disabled, but still is included in so many things. That is amazing. Since he was a kid, a lovely lady named Tracey took him out to get some fresh air every couple of weeks. Now they teach kids about inclusivity.

Tracey and Baruch:
Since Baruch was 2, Tracey took him and other disabled kids out and about every 6 weeks. After Baruch turned into an adult, he and Tracey still kept in touch. Now Baruch is 29, they are starting to teach kids about inclusivity.

Inclusivity to Baruch:
Inclusivity is shown in so many ways, could be as simple as asking how others feel or as big as inventing something to make life easier for another. Innovation really helped Baruch in so many ways. It made him feel equal. Inventions like the tube in his neck to the app he can use to communicate, helps him and many others feel included. So many inventions have been thought of and created to provide help to all abilities.

Baruch:
When Baruch was born his tongue was abnormally large, so as soon as they could Baruch ended up with a tube in his throat so he could breathe. Baruch was 2 when he met Tracey, and they still see each other on the weekends now. Tracey helped with things like putting the drip in for his food, getting him out of the house and just having someone that he can have fun with. Even though he can do his food himself now, he still enjoys talking with Tracey. Since Baruch is deaf, cant speak and partially blind having someone he can use sign language with is a big deal.

Conclusion:
This was such a fun and inclusive experience with Tracey and Baruch. We learnt so many new things. I hope that they will be able to teach many other schools about inclusivity.

TEACHER FEEDBACK on INCLUSION OUR WAY INCURSIONS (July/Aug 2022)

Our kindergarten and primary school incursions are receiving great feedback from educators about their content and level of engagement with students. Thank you to Holy Spirit School and Heathmont East PS for having us recently. We loved it!

Relevance to learning outcomes: "It was certainly a magnificent way of demonstrating inclusion in our world and how things are changing for the better. We really appreciate the connections you made with the current work in class. "

Engagement: "Tracey was able to engage the students the whole time. Baruch engaged the students and they really enjoyed learning from him."

"Your conversation was engaging and kept them thinking through questioning."

''It was a unique experience. It is obvious that Tracey cares deeply about her work and about Baruch. Perspectives were presented that mainstream teachers with little experience of disability, could not possibly cover.”

Key learnings for students: "Sign language AUSLAN. Learning from someone with disabilities."

"Learning all about living with disabilities."

"Understanding that people with disabilities have obvious different physical and health needs to our own, but that we all share the same need for love, acceptance and inclusion."

"Differences, Sign language, Daily living Devices/ Adaptions, Music festival, Innovation."

"A wonderfully educative experience."
