Fun Adventurous school excursions with NRMA Resorts

NRMA Parks and Resorts is bringing education into the wild with its adventurous new Bear Grylls Survival Academy.

Learning hands-on outdoor survival skills, working as a team and building confidence in the great outdoors are all part of NRMA Parks and Resorts’ exclusive partnership with the world-famous adventurer Bear Grylls.

Designed especially for school-aged kids, the program – called Shipwrecked – is made up of four missions set up at purpose-built Bear Grylls camps at select NRMA Parks and Resorts. Students learn how to build a bush shelter, tie knots, navigate using a compass, prepare and cook damper, camouflage in the wild and – the most fun of all – how to search for bushfoods like witchety grubs or mealy worms (and even give them a taste test!).

Ideal for primary and high-school groups, NRMA Parks and Resorts has partnered with the Australian Directory of School Activities, Excursions and Accommodation to bring the Bear Grylls Survival program to school camps. The program is a great way for students to ditch the devices and have some good old-fashioned fun in the great outdoors. Instilling the confidence to break down social barriers and make new friends, overcome fears, and build resilience, all while bonding as a team to problem-solve and most importantly – never give up.  Long regarded as one of the most trusted brands in Australia, NRMA Parks and Resorts provides a high-quality school camp experience with plenty of adventures in a safe and secure environment.

The four hour-long missions at the Bear Grylls Survival Academy are:

  • Hide to Survive where participants will learn how to build a shelter for protection using building materials found in nature
  • Get out Alive where kids learn to tie knots, cross difficult terrain, and follow a trail using communication and teamwork
  • Navigate the Island where kids learn about pacing, navigation and how to follow an orienteering course
  • Feast in the Wild teaches fire lighting methods, together with preparing and cooking damper and learning the skill of throwing spears at targets.

School students will love the highly engaging Shipwrecked program and enjoy an unforgettable time at camp. The program offers a real chance to broaden the traditional education experience in a wholistic way that embraces nature and the outdoors and is wholly beneficial to students’ wellbeing.

As Bear Grylls says, "It is through adventure in our wild spaces that people, especially children, really learn and grow. When I think about the outdoors, I don’t just see woodlands, rivers and mountains; I see the world’s biggest classroom. Taking part in an outdoor expedition frees the mind and liberates the spirit. It also reminds us of what we’re truly capable of achieving. That is why I believe that every child has the right to adventure."
