Sustainability School Incursions

There are a variety of ways teachers can incorporate sustainability in classroom learning and activities and encourage students to practice sustainable habits in their daily lives.

By incorporating sustainability into their daily routines and lessons, teachers can help students understand the importance of protecting the environment and develop lifelong habits that promote a more sustainable future.

  1. Integrating sustainable practices into daily routines: Encourage students to turn off lights and electronics when not in use, recycle, compost, and use reusable water bottles.

  2. Incorporating sustainability into lesson plans: For example, a science teacher could teach about renewable energy sources, while a social studies teacher could discuss the impacts of climate change on different communities.

  3. Using outdoor learning opportunities: Take students on a nature walk, have them plant a school garden, or organise a beach cleanup to help students understand the importance of environmental protection.

  4. Educate students on local ecosystems: Teach students about the local flora and fauna, and encourage them to respect and protect the environment during their visit.

  5. Encouraging eco-friendly behavior: Challenge students to reduce waste and consumption, and make environmentally responsible choices both inside and outside of the classroom.

  6. Pack sustainably: Provide students with reusable water bottles and encourage them to bring reusable bags for any purchases. Avoid using disposable food containers and utensils.

  7. Reduce waste: Encourage students to avoid single-use items and to recycle or compost when possible.

  8. Collaborating with community organisations: Partner with local organisations, such as conservation groups or sustainability-focused businesses, to bring real-world examples of sustainability into the classroom.

  9. Promoting sustainability through art and media: Have students create posters, videos, or artwork that raise awareness about environmental issues and promote sustainable practice.
