School Excursions Blue Mountains

About: Home to world-class engineering, students can discover the wonders of the Jamison Valley aboard the World’s steepest railway, the Skyway and Cableway.

Descending on the world’s steepest railway, students will traverse back in time discovering the transformation of an old coal mine transport network into the Scenic Railway.
As they embark on a thrilling journey into the rainforest, students can learn about the industrial and engineering genius behind all our rides – including an electric winch system that originated in the 1930s.

Students will learn about how Katoomba Coal Mine was operated, and the history of Katoomba supplying coal to Sydney’s rail and transport corporations in the height of Australia’s industrial revolution.

Gliding between ancient cliffs on Australia’s highest single-span cable car, the Scenic Skyway takes students on a discovery of the Blue Mountains like none other. Passing over the Katoomba Falls, students can learn about the history of the valley from almost 660 million years ago.

Travel through periods of time with the Scenic Cableway – the Southern Hemisphere’s steepest aerial cable car. The cableway takes students closer to the ancient sandstone cliffs where they can discover how the Jamison Valley and flat-topped plateaus were formed, with an intimate view of different layers of weathered sandstone, claystone, ironstone and mudstone. Travelling between Scenic World’s top station and rainforest, below a canopy network of vines and native trees, the Scenic Cableway is a guaranteed learning experience that offers discovery of a range of natural wonders and engineering mastery.

Located in Katoomba - just 90 minutes from Sydney CBD, Scenic World is one of the most accessible sites to discover the wonder of the Blue Mountains.
